There are Herculean numbers of good unpublished manuscripts that will never reach a national publishers’ desk for a serious reading. Some may reach the publishers desk but no serious reading will take place unless the author has an agent with long term connection to the publisher. Even then there is no guarantee that the work will be published. The current manuscript rejection rate is estimated to be somewhere around 99% for non-published authors. Traditional publishers continue to place their investment in proven authors and profiles with high exposure. The publishers pour their money into giant marketing programs to sell books and proven authors and high profile people must be part of that marketing concept.

Self publishing has been the alternative for many years. There are still a number of steps that lead to self-publishing which does not include marketing the book after publication. First, the manuscript must be edited. Misspelled words and bad punctuation does not lend credibility to any publication. Secondly, the manuscript must be formatted to the size of the book to be published. Thirdly, a book cover must be designed which will have instant appeal. Fourthly, when all these ducks are in a row, the book pages and the book cover must be printed in the desired volume. Finally the book must be trimmed to size and and bound. You must determine the market price for the book. Unfortunately even if you only published one book, that first book must absorb all the cost. For this reason volume printing can and does lower the cost of the book. Generally the cost is prohibitive for any volume under 1000 books. If you are self publishing without a good backup marketing program you will be running a risk to print more than 1000 books at a time. Next comes the big expensive and skilled chore. That chore is marketing the book. A non published author will have a very difficult time convincing national distributors to distribute the book. Even if you convince a distributor to market the book, the national distributor may require several thousand books up front with a right of return of unsold copies. So lets say you publish or print 1000 paper back books starting with a raw un-edited manuscript. You are looking at $3,500 to $5,000 cost without marketing. If you were fortunate enough to get a national distributor to market the book they would probably require 10,000 books up front and while the cost would lower because of the volume, you would still be looking at about $30,000 out of pocket up front.

Finally there comes the best alternative yet for the non-published author. The Internet with all its drawbacks offer the non-published author a great alternative for publishing and marketing. That alternative is called digital publishing, commonly called an E-book. While you still have to go through the steps of editing, you can eliminate some of the other steps and costs involved in publishing a hard copy book-primarily the cost of volume printing. Instead you have the steps of editing, formatting the manuscript in an acceptable windows program, then converting that program into an E-book format, designing a cover and publishing a digital copy of the book, setting up a marketing web site and then marketing the book.. The good news is that you only have to publish one digital copy....but you could sell a million copies off that one digital copy. All your copies are sent by E-mail so you have virtually no shipping cost.

What this means for the non-published author is simply you can become a published author in record time at a drastically reduced cost. It also means you are not going to take a risk in publishing or printing thousands of copies of the book, you only have to print one digital book and one cover. The trick here of course is to learn how to do Internet marketing with your book. There are many good instructional programs published on the subject of Internet marketing as well as many bad, confusing instructional programs. The Internet is constantly in evolution.
